CRUFTS - the
worlds largest and the worlds greatest dog show. Every year in March dog
loving people from around the world come to Birmingham to visit this event.
It is great to feel this special CRUFTS athmosphere at the ringside. In this
modern exhibition centre you still can find both, the big industry around
dogs with their enormous grown range of products and inbetween these typical
English stands offering products you cannot find everywhere.
For
foreign visitors it is not so easy to follow the judging in the ring. At FCI
shows always the same classes are offered. The catalogue shows the classes
and the dogs entered are shown with all details underneath. All dogs are
continuously numbered and they have to appear in the ring in the same order.
But as the British Kennel Club is not a member of the FCI, they have their
own system.
In
England the catalogue has two sections for each breed. In the first section
the owners are listed in alphabetic order. Underneath every owner, his
entered dogs are listed with all details (date of birth, breeder, sire, dam
and entered class). Here the dogs are continuously numbered, regardless of
which class(es) they are entered (it is possible to enter one dog in several
classes). The second section shows the individual classes. But here only the
dogs name and catalogue number is mentioned. In the ring the exhibitors can
decide themselves where to stand, the dogs are not sorted by their number.
In big classes and if you don't know all exhibitors it can be difficult even
to find out who is absent.
Also
the classes are different to the FCI system. In
England they even vary per breed, apparently depending on the usual entry of
every breed. The criteria in which class a dog can be entered depending on
his age and his show results so far. For example the criteria for the
„Post Graduate Class“
are:
“For dogs which have not won a Challenge
Certificate or five or more First Prizes at Championship Shows in Post
Graduate, Minor Limit, Mid Limit, Limit and Open classes, whether restricted
or not.”
Champions can only be entered in Open class. This system explains why the
quality of dogs often increases continuously from puppy up to open
class.
After the judge has inspected all dogs of a class, he decides which dogs he
wants to place (1st, 2nd, 3rd). Above that the judge could decide to award
something like grades to additional dogs. Then the ranking would continue
with
Res. (Reserve = 4th. place), VHC (Very Highly Commended = 5th place), HC (Highly
Commended = 6th. place) and C (Commended = 7th place). Most common is a
ranking until VHC. Only the placed dogs (1st., 2nd. and 3rd.) for a
short judge report.
After all classes of one sex were judged, the procedure is similar to FCI
shows: From all class winners (also Veteran + Puppy) the judge choose his CC
winners (dog and bitch). These two then compete for the best of breed Scottish Terrier (BOB).

For every judge it is a great honour to
be invited to judge a breed at CRUFTS. This year it was Monique van Brempt
from Belgium who juged the Scottish Terriers. Years back she used to breed
Scotties herself with her prefix "Limicourt". She also imported dogs from
England like Ch. Stonemoor Roger and Ch. Penjetta Pepper Pot.
91 Scotties were entered for Mrs. van Brempt. 71
came from England, 20 from abroad (F: 8, D: 7, RUS: 2,
USA, DK + CRO: 1 each).
As usual at CRUFTS the audience was notably large, international and competent.
Breed fanciers from all continents met at the ringside. There always was fair applause
even though some results seem to surprise people outside the ring. As always,
some decisions were discussed at the benches after judging.
It definitely was a great feeling, to be
back in this special ring. I would say that overall the dogs quality was a
bit better than the bitches this year - but this is my personal opinion.
